Miscellaneous Information

April is when termites begin swarming.

Termites can be distinguished from ants by their thick waists and straight antennae. Ants have slender waists and elbowed antennae.

It would be a good idea to mount a rain gauge on a post near the garden to keep track of precipitation so you can tell when to water. Most gardens need about 1 inch of rain per week between April and September.

This is the month when Hummingbirds decide to return from their winter homes in Central America.

Honeybees are now beginning to swarm, pleaseĀ DO NOTĀ be alarmed. Notify your local beekeeper so they can find a new home for these very beneficial insects.

It might be a good idea to invest in soaker hoses and a drip irrigation system to help save water and money.
